No Name didn't like coming to this place, mostly it was because he didn't enjoy the lack of technology and the smell of horse piss. But there was also something else to the Mist Region that just made him feel an urgency to leave, none the less he had no choice but to come here; 3 jobs and all needed him to arrive within the city of Lindblum. The first job had been an official request from the mercenaries guild, he was on this trip with Mark....and whilst the kid got his tinkering done within Lindblum to prepare for a greater journey to Burmacia, No Name was going to take some some side jobs to prepare.

The first job that had caught his eye was the preparation for the Great Hunt, supposedly it was some traditional festival held here every year where wild animals and monsters would be let loose into the streets in order to entertain the masses. Of course he didn't see the amusement in such things, they could be dangerous....just what would happen if an innocent got caught up in the mess? None the less a job was a job, and all this one required him to do was mess up a few wild monsters for the capture squads. The next job that caught his eye was a little bit more complicated and required him going to another region of the world entirely.

" Ispen's Castle?"

He said as he read the mysterious request to discover the exact location of this lost fortress. Supposedly the quest would require that he leave the Mist Continent and go to the Hidden Regions of the world beyond the Mist....a place where no airship could take him. That alone posed a problem for the anonymous swordsman, though apparently once the quest was accepted a map to the deep roads that lead directly to Lost would be delivered to him by courier. Leaving the Mercenaries Guild with a notice for the courier to meet him at Dragon's Gate (the on foot exit/entrance to lindblum) he would head there with the intent of completing the first of his tasks.

A courier’s work was never done during these times of adventure. And it seemed fate wanted nothing more than to bring its plaything back to its beginning. As the powers would have it, the latest mission of the courier was to drop off some map. Incidentally the adventurers of this world were ill prepared… perhaps some equipment was forgotten along the way. Regardless of the reason, she was again on an airship taking her to the eternal misty continent with firm instructions on where to meet her recipient.

The ride overall was quiet, if not dull without the presence of her little companion. Mogum had insisted that the woman take the missions herself, either because of the threat of danger, or because he wanted her to experience the world within the anchor of his cuteness. She did not understand, but she missed the soft critter terribly. Mainly due to the fact that she felt naked and exposed without him. Without her companion in her lap, the eyes of passersby seemed to glide of her with a curious interest. She could feel the touch of their gaze upon her skin, upon her new world attire, and to her eyes that were cast perpetually downward. An expose nerve upon the flesh of a wound; delicate… but fragile in the most complicated sense. Were it not for her book, she undoubtedly would had curled into herself.

Arrival to the docks had never felt as pleasing as this. Once the anchors clamped the hull of the ship and the doors slid open, she was on the solid ground before the announcement to disembark was given. She didn’t know why she disliked other movement besides walking. Perhaps it had something to do with other people being in control of her whereabouts. Knowing that she was under the pull of another without chance to chart her own (and perhaps aimless) path. But such thoughts were for when time was not of the essence. She had a delivery to make, and then another to take on before the week was out.

Ensuring she was collected, she headed off toward the city gate (with some direction of course) to meet her recipient. She hadn’t met a mercenary before, and with the opportunity to meet someone knew, she was a little excited. There was the smile of anticipation upon her lips, the very smile that made her a notable addition to the Mognet family. And of course, there was a little bound to her step… or as easily as a woman of her stature could ‘bound’ without looking like a skipping loon. Approaching the gate was a line both inward and out, but the displayed credentials of a courier allowed her to pass without hindrance. Without a proper name or face to greet, she simply waited with letter and map in hand, and of course with her illustrated book propped open. Travel only gave her sparse times to read. But now was as good of a time as any. She had finally managed to work her way up to ‘D’.

Lindblum city was a very different environment than what the man with NO Name was used to, the smell of Midgar was normally one of wastage and exhaust. Here however the air had a more fresh sense about it, the Mist Continent didn't burn fossil fuels or use mako, rather they harnessed the magical properties of the Mist that surrounded their region. For that reason at its height lindblum had a very clear air, though that all would change when he moved down to the lower sections of the city. The dragons gate was in the bowels of Lindblum, it was kept clean and up to date but the air was thick with the same mist seeping in through the closed doors.

The guards kept an eye on those doors, kept an eye on anyone who was hanging around them in fact. No Name himself felt slightly anxious under their gaze knowing that he was going to have to wait here until the courier arrived with his map. A few minutes passed, the anonymous mercenary had drifted off into a strange sleep until awakened by the sounds of an opening gate. His eyes would be greeted by a familiar if not changed face, he had been waiting in the corner, and the Mist in the area obscured anyone’s vision almost terribly. It was the girl, the girl from when he was in Vector…the one that the Tinker seemed so interested in. For a moment No Name would feel guilty about not bringing Mark along for the trip, likely his eyes would have lit up at the prospect of seeing her in person.

” Hey girl!....”.

He called out and approached, realizing that he still had no confirmation on her name other than Mark’s claim. At first he wasn't sure what the girl was doing here, at least that was until he saw her uniform bear the distinct marks of a moogle’s organization. He had been waiting o a courier…and the most popular service for getting things delivered in the Mist Region?....Mognet. ” Don’t suppose you got a package for me?....I’m waiting on a map”. For a brief moment between his question and her answer hew ould consider the strange lengths of fate that would lead to her being the one that delivered the letter that contained his map. Of course it could just be coincidence, but the moment that he considered that thought the face of the tinker flared up in his mind with that weird knowing grin on his face.

‘Elder Drake- A fiend that attacks with alarming speed and bares a grudge against staff-welding opponents…’ Well into her resource guide, the diligent reader had come across a gem of interest. There were variations of this creature called ‘drake’, which incidentally was some form of a lesser dragon, but none appealed to her as strongly as the Elder. It was a great horned beast with an imposing maw and muscled physique. Or at least that was what she was led to believe by the image. It looked like a strong, natural beast, unlike those she had already had the unfortunately privilege of fighting. And yet, the illustration made it a creature that deserved considerable regard. She wondered if she would ever meet a creature like that…

Her finger rested on the edge of the page, ready to turn, until a voice called out. Her nature to heed all garnered her attention to look around, spying first the guards standing well at attention, then to a stark visage of white approaching from the parted gate. A moment passed as her memory worked to recall a name for the face that drew near. And though there was none, recognition touched her eyes none the less and a smile followed smoothly after.

“Hi there!”

She took a few steps closer to meet him half-way then dipped her head in polite greeting. She was not very good with small talk for conversation, but for the sake of camaraderie, she tried. “It has been a little while, hasn’t it?” She spoke quietly, though clearly, trying to best to muster a degree of calm despite her jittery nerves. As fate would have it, it was he she had been waiting for. A delivery to one she had not seen since the madness of Vector; fate was kind, if not curious. “Oh… yes,” she piped as an afterthought, then released her spheres with a subtle impress of energy. “I suppose this is for you? From the Mercenary Guide?” She reached around and brought a sphere forward. “Just a moment…” The translucent orb appeared to glow in her palm then began to stretch from its center to nearly double its size. At its top, a rounded shape emerged as if something from the other end was pushing it through, until she grabbed it and pulled it free. As the sphere reduced in size, she spoke to it; “Thank you very much for your business. We hope you will continue to use MogNet for your deliveries. You may now return the sphere.” And nearly in an instant, another glowing orb appeared, returning the count to three.

“This is for you,” Alpha handed the rolled map to its recipient then slipped her hand into her side pouch. “And…I hope you can help me with this, as well…” She freed a small letter with a single name addressed. “Do you know about the ‘HoneyBee Inn’? They gave me several letters to deliver recently… but did not tell me where… or to whom. But strangely, one of the letters started getting warm when I got here.-“ she waved the letter slightly “-Do you know if they have a subsidiary? Like the MistyMog?”

The girl recognized him eventually, though what he didn’t seem to understand was the sudden change from her being unable to speak and now being able to rather fluidly. There was something about her words though that made them feel rather fake, like it was a scripted company line she had memorized, a tourist reading sentences right off her guide book. None the less it seemed that he was right, and through a strange ritual unseen to mognet before the man with No Name now had his map. He would at first feel around the letter just to make sure that the package had survived the strange magic unmolested, when he was content he would open it up and unfurl it for a quick glance. ” Yeah the guild…”.He would mumble as he looked over the parchment.

By the looks of the map it led him to the Que Marsh, a place where a strange race of beings known for their rather eccentric tastes in cooking made their home; wherever this tunnel was…it was here. None the less he had a mission to complete within the Mist Region first and if he could kill two birds with one stone that that would be dandy. ” Well you certainly got more to say for yourself this time”. It seemed though that the girl had more to say following her delivery, not that he was expecting her just to disappear once he had gotten it just that he still wasn’t used to having her talking. Still she chose a rather odd topic, the honeybee inn…the temperature of his face began to rise slightly as he thought about it.

The Honeybee inn….Sector 5…whore house.

That was the truth of it, of course they’d never openly come out and say that, it was advertised primarily as a gentleman’s club. ” It’s a….uh…place where men meet women….”. In tight outfits who often took money for their time, but then again she didn’t really need to know the gritty details. Still something about that whole thing rang familiar to him….another letter? ” Hm, well have you tried opening it?...never know might be a season pass or something”. Yes, the Honeybee inn demanded a pass from those who wanted to make use of its services, if nothing else it was a rather exclusive whore house though he couldn’t imagine just what she would do with the pass. Then again, she was a rather big lady.

Even if the words she spoke were not yet in her own tongue, she was quite proud of how well she could hold a conversation. Even if it as with a sphere for a portion of the time. She took care, and minded the words that came forth, retelling herself again to be clear lest she fall back into a habit of mumbling with uncertainty. Last she wanted was for this man to think she was incompetent in her job. Or at worst, treat her as a child again… (which from what she came to understand was a very demeaning thing). There was too the pressure of being the representative for the Mognet. With business booming and deliveries to send off, she could not afford for one recipient to speak ill of her delivery methods. As the moogles were fond of reminding her, she was the face of the Net in the world beyond their hubs. She hadn’t experienced the pains of job pressure until she became employed.

It was embarrassing enough that she needed information on her next location.

But from what she learned in few words was that this place was not at all what she expected. Why would there need to be a place for men to meet women? From what she observed, it happened quite often in the streets. “…season pass?” She turned the letter between two fingers, inspecting both its front and back, then around again. She didn’t know what it meant, only that it continued to grow warm as she held it out again. She turned it over to its front to better see the written name. “J-O-H-N…” she mouthed quietly, while doing her best not to look silly. “John…” she sounded carefully. That did not sound like her calling. But then again, she did not feel the letter was hers… let alone hers to open. “It reads ‘John’…” she held out the letter to him. “It seems to ‘like’ you. Are you John?”

Still he found himself here talking to the girl, he wasn’t sure why….he could just blow her off at any time and head off onto his quest for money. But he stuck around, willing to be a sort of crutch as she understood things beyond the Mognet opening and closing lines. That’s when she began to read out who the letter was addressed to, he wasn’t quite sure if she was allowed to do something like that but there it was. The name on the letter was rather generic and meant nothing to him until she asked if it was him. The letter grew warm around him, and John had been the name that he used around other people if for no other reason than to avoid explaining that his real name was lost to death and time.

” Well John is a rather….nevermind…yes that’s me….let’s see what the letter says”

As his tone may have indicated he wasn’t sure just what this letter was about or even if it truly was for him. He had been to the Honey Bee inn once or twice, never long enough to buy a lifetime membership…it was usually whilst he was dru-. Suddenly the night in Junon was all shooting back to him, he HAD been drunk enough to make that call to the Tinker, and he couldn’t really remember collapsing on the bed. Was it possible that he had done something, somewhere whilst intoxicated that warranted a letter from the main office of this brothel? ” Great”. He thought, inwardly sighing as he laid out his hand for the letter. ” Last thing I need is some letter telling me that I’ve killed a hooker and am due in court”. Indeed, it was the last thing he needed. Money was tight as it was and he didn’t want to have to be dishing out bribes to friends, families and officials (because that was how justice was done in the slums).

Whether his statement was meant to be taken literally or not, it was the intention of the woman to do just that. When insinuated that they were to see the contents of the letter, she was more than willing to part the envelop and investigate its contents. A single folded note slipped innocently into her waiting hand though the smell that wafted from the interior was left for the imagination to ponder on. Again, written on the edge of the letter spelled ‘John’ followed by the letters ‘XXOOXX’. A code perhaps?

“…Mr. John,” she began quietly as though reading to herself. “Thank you for your continued pa…tronage to the HoneyBee Inn. As requested, we have selected your lucky lady for our dating service, and hope you will find our taste agreeable. Per your choices by our survey, we have selected for you:-“

Her eyes scrolled down the small paragraph to a neatly columned line, and beside it was a picture that looked a little too familiar for comfort.

“…we have selected for you:
Code Named: Alpha// Life Bringer
Age: 26
Species: Unknown (But appears human!)-“
Her enthusiasm was lacking for this exclamation. Something about not knowing her own kind, did not set well with her. Never the less, she continued relaying the profile.
“-
‘Dimensions: 34… 28…38…
Enjoys: Reading
Dislikes: Unknown
Limits: Unknown
Kinks: Unknown
Special Skills: Unknown’

We hope you are satisfied with our selection. If successful, please request a satisfaction survey by courier, or stop by the Inn at your earliest convenience.

Have fun and Good Luck,
Xxxoooxxx.”

A silence had fallen by the letter’s completion. She hadn’t the slightest idea about what she had read, but she felt oddly uncomfortable about its contents. Frowning slightly, she stared at the picture of herself. It was an image of her… smiling. Bi-colored eyes aglow with the gleam of mischief. The face itself was her own… but the ‘feel’ of the image did not convey the truth. She did not feel as though she was looking at an image of herself… but a mirror reflection warped somehow. And since when was she labeled “Life Bringer”? She had never addressed herself like that…

A moment more of silence would pass til she finally found the nerve to fold the letter. Quickly, she stuffed it back into its envelop then all but shoved it into ‘John’s’ chest as if afraid it would suddenly snap at her.

To say that this was awkward was to make light of a rather strange situation. The letter’s contents were most definitely addressed to him (drunk or otherwise) and seemed to be setting him up on a blind date with…well. The courier of the letter. There was an odd silence between them as the contents of the letter were read, when she finally pushed it into his chest with all the force of a heavy weight boxer he would take a few steps back before examining the letter and the picture within for himself. ” It seems….we’ve been set up on a blind date…I think”. He wasn’t quite sure how to explain it to the girl, or even to explain it to himself.

It was quite possible that whilst drunk he had signed himself up for this kind of thing, though knowing his drunken antics he might not have used the name John. Was there someone else that had been looking to cause mischief between the two? Perhaps this was the girl’s moogle companion, though…the moogle seemed more concerned about keeping her to himself and probably wouldn’t risk the date. Then again, maybe it was the Tinker….the boy knew of the two of them and lived in Midgar just like him. That was it, that had to be it. At the bottom of the letter the instructions seemed to be that both parties needed to fill out a report on their date and send it back in to receive payment for ‘beta-testing’ their service.

” Well…I have this job to do outside of the city…and I don’t mind taking you out for food but I’m kind of broke right now…if we complete the job…sure, I’ll go get dinner with you”.

It wasn’t as if he wouldn’t have taken her out anyway, but this random letter seemed to provide the added incentive of greed. ”…Care to join me in trapping a few monsters?”.

This was far from how she expected the delivery to go. Perhaps a mild conversation, a nibble at a shop, then back on the transport to her next delivery. Afterall, she still had to find the C.I.A building in Besaid. But she found herself hardpressed to move, let alone think after she replayed the contents of the letter. What was written did not bother her as much, but rather the profile on herself. When had anyone been able to get this information from her? She didn’t even know her age! How would the paper know?! And what of those numbers? Those dimensions… What were dimensions? And how did it pertain to her!?

The letter was not even addressed to her, and she felt more offended than John appeared to be. In fact, he appeared rather calm about it. Was this something that happened to humans often? She hadn’t realized she had been frowning so hard until he addressed her, then near instantly her brows smoothed to neutral grace. “…join you?” she mouthed, not quite understanding his meaning in regards to ‘trapping’. Wasn’t the purpose to destroy monsters?

“Well…I…” an awkward foot rubbed lightly at the back of her leg. “I cant…” she glanced at the gate as it drew apart. Another crowd of new arrivals traversed the misty road into the city. “…I have deliveries to make. I still have more letters…” she pat her bag lightly though let a finger trail absently against its hide rim. But how quickly her stomach agreed for her with an eager growl at the mention of food. She couldn’t remember that last time she had a meal while on the go. A snack perhaps… and a strange little wafer in the shape of a heart from Mogum.

Her stomach purred at the memory… then whined all the more in despair to the hours that had passed since then.

The gates began to open and from that point there was little that could be done but walk through them, his eyes glanced at her as she seemed undecided. Her words themselves said that she couldn’t go, but her body language told him that she wanted to even if it was only at the promise of a filled stomach. But there was not much time to decide on the matter, the guards didn’t like keeping the gate open and he needed to complete this mission in order to get paid. ” Deliveries…yeah, but those can wait can’t they?...I mean Mognet is usually known for moogles delivering letters…and heck that can take a while….you are probably revolutionary for them in terms of high speed delivery”. It was both a compliment and a truth, Mognet wasn’t always the most reliable or speedy of letter services in the world, and if this girl was now taking on their jobs…well things would likely move along far more smoothly.

” Besides, I bet it costs money to travel all over the world delivering letters. I bet it’d be a lot easier on you if you had a travel fund, help me out on this job and I’ll give you half my take, and dinner”.

In truth, half his take on this job wasn’t saying much, but when you added on the reward that the Honey Bee inn were offering, well if he could convince her to walk out of those gates with him then he’d be near on doubling his money. ” It’ll be simple…All we have to do is find some monsters….beat them up some and then call in the hunters…they’ll trap the beasts in cages and drag them back here for the prep stage of the Great Hunt….”. And if he remembered anything it was that this girl and her magic were rather good at smashing things, his sword would do the job nicely…but it never hurt to have some help.

The more he spoke, the more the woman felt he was somehow singing the gospel of the courier. It was true, the expense of travel was certainly a burden at times. But to counteract this was the extra tacked on to the price of her delivery charge. A simple addition of her fare, and that was all. But this did not count for her food along the way. In the end, she was still digging into her own pockets for the amenities… which lately was growing into a problem she would have liked to ignore. She hadn’t much thought of it at length until it was mentioned. But faced with it now…

She looked to the parted gates then to John. Again the edge of her boot curled at the back of a lengthy leg. “Well…” The purpose of the Great Hunt was unknown to her. But John seemed inclined to take part in the work for it. And it truly seemed as if he wanted her along…

Sighing softly, Alpha turned toward a small shop with an adjoining rest stop (a much needed addition for the travelers that ventured far without a proper toilet) and rushed to it, bypassing slower patrons by long, purposeful gait. A few minutes passed as she handled whatever business seemed to come about, which in the reveal upon her exit was a swift (and expertly crafted) wardrobe change. Her satchel was safely ‘pocketed’ by her spheres, and in its place was her staff nicely polished and mended. Her work attire was safely stowed away as well, and in place were relatively casual clothes; a pair of contouring shorts and a snug vest-like shirt with a wide, upturned collar. And to top it all, a fedora of sorts with an assortment of colored feathers, cuffed by a wide braided band at the width. She had been told it was the kind of fashion for magic users.

But truly, what did the naïve know of fashion?

She approached John with a smile, more so relaxed now out of her work clothes. She tipped him the rim of her hat as she had seen others do whilst adding a little bow of sorts as if greeting properly for the first time.

It seemed that eventually e had worn her down, the first thing that had broken down those walls of responsibility seemed to be the mention of food, likely too was it that the second point also made an impact not just to her wallet but her stomach. When she returned, almost miraculously changing into an entirely different outfit, No Name couldn’t help wonder where she kept all of these clothes, then again perhaps it was something to do with those strange orbs that followed her around. He’d take a look at the dress up and down before giving her a brief nod of approval and a gesture to follow him out of the Dragon’s Gate.

” The Great Hunt is this, big tournament in Lindblum”.

He’d say to her as she left, figuring that if she was going to be partnering up with him on this one she would at least want to know the details of the job. ” Hunters, monster killers and the like all come from around Gaia to hunt monsters that are let loose in the city streets….the one who kills the most dangerous monsters wins…but first in order to get those monsters ready for the Hunt….its down to someone to hunt them first, but not kill them”. Now that was far easier said than done, hunting to ill was one thing as the beast would have no qualms about killing you, but hunting with the intention of keeping the beast alive…that was something else.

” The idea is to knock the monsters out…now around here there are a few drakes….smaller than dragons but still pretty fearsome creatures in their own right…think we’ll nab a few of those for the master hunters….tough scales too so I won’t really have to worry much about going easy with my sword”.

Well that as his idea at least, he wasn’t sure about her. The girl seemed to use mostly magic the last time that they had battled anything, and her emotions seemed to rule just how powerful her magical blasts could be. ” So….where is the little moogle guy?”.
